Aaron Digulla
In 1984, I merged my hobby and my vocation. Today, I'm getting paid to translate mumbling into the "programming language of the year $x" and even to fix someone else's mistakes.
I wrote code in many programming languages and learned the hard way that I'm not a good software developer without automated unit tests. Writing good tests became a cornerstone of my daily work. Nothing made my life easier than this.

KEYWORDS: Lessons learned, Methods, Testing, Tools
AGENDA: | 18:15-19:30h: Talk incl. Q/A After a (hopefully) interesting talk, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with the speaker and professional colleagues over beer, wine and rich finger foods. |
SPEAKER: Aaron Digulla
SLIDES: 240910_Hotfixes_Refactoring_and_Chained_Unit_Tests.zip
In my talk, I'll present a low-stress way to patch an urgent production issue: cut code out of a god class, add unit tests, and apply a fix.
This will then be the basis for refactoring the code into something that an average developer can maintain - without a stop-the-world rewrite from scratch.
On the way, we will convert slow integration tests into chained unit tests (CUT). This will free us from unwanted dependencies like shared test databases and external services.
I'll share a git repository at the end of the presentation so you can follow the process in the commits.
