Buckminster and p2

Build, Assemble, and Provision Eclipse and your RCP applications.

LOCATION: Zürich
KEYWORDS: Concept, Technology, Tools

AGENDA:17:00 - 18:00h: Talk incl. Q/A
Afterwards you are invited to a refreshment.

SPEAKER: Henrik Lindberg   COMPANY: Cloudsmith Inc.

SLIDES 2: 091029_ESE09-p2-short.pdf

This talk shows how automated builds and assembly of RCP applications and p2 repositories can be made in a few easy steps using Eclipse Buckminster, and Equinox p2.

Eclipse Buckminster is a tool for assembling and building applications, and Equinox p2 is the new Eclipse provisioning framework. These technologies cover the development process from an initial empty workspace, client side building, headless automated builds, running testing and code coverage, to a final p2 repository (combined out of multiple p2 repositories) ready for provisioning applications (or the IDE itself) to the world, or to internal users behind a corporate firewall, and then keeping users' environments updated.

You will get introductions to both Buckminster and p2, learn what they do, and how they work, as well as a get demonstrations of how an application is assembled, built and provisioned, and how to aggregate p2 repositories using the Buckminster Site Aggregator.

This talk will also present the Eclipse b3 project – a new generation of Eclipse technology to further simplify software build and assembly. The work of the project will be a complement and potential successor to the PDE Build component. The project proposes three key objectives:

  • Making build processes simpler, repeatable, reproducible and adaptable
  • Bridging discontinuities between building and provisioning software
  • Aligning potentially overlapping Eclipse build technologies.
